Required Pre-movement Milk Testing for Influenza A H5N1 in Lactating Dairy Cows

Effective April 29, USDA requires all healthy lactating dairy cattle moving interstate (except directly to slaughter) to have a negative Influenza A matrix test. Milk samples from 30 lactating animals per shipment should be collected within 7 days prior to movement and sent to CAHFS-Davis using this special submission form. Results will be provided within 3 days of samples arriving at CAHFS-Davis. The originating premises must have a Premises ID, which can be obtained from your CDFA district or at this website. Specific instructions for sample collection & shipment, including the CDFA email address to send your submission form to, can be found here. If a dairy is experiencing illness in dairy cattle that is suspicious of Influenza A, contact your CDFA district office to coordinate sampling for testing at CAHFS and epidemiologic investigation. Clinical lactating dairy cattle are ineligible for interstate movement as per 9 C.F.R. 71.3(b). Please see the CDFA website for more details.
